'She Monkeys,' 'Bombay Beach' Take Top Tribeca Honors

Lisa Aschan's She Monkeys (Apflickorna) was named best narrative film and Alma Har'el's Bombay Beach was chosen best documentary at the 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival, which handed out its prizes at a ceremony Thursday night at the W Union Square in New York City.

Aschan's award included a $25,000 prize and the art award "Anna Christie Entering the Bar, 1965-1967" by Robert De Niro Sr. The award was presented by the fest's co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro along with Larry Korman from AKA Residences.

The world narrative competition jury, which was comprised of Souleymane Cisse, Scott Glenn, David Gordon Green, Rula Jebreal, Art Linson, Jason Sudeikis and Dianne Wiest, praised She Monkeys for its "balanced storytelling that moves between danger and innocence."

Other awards in the narrative competition included: best actor, Ramadhan "Shami" Bizimana for Grey Matter (Matiere Grise); best actress, Carice van Houten for Black Butterflies; best cinematography, Luisa Tillinger, Artificial Paradises (Paraisos Artificiales); and best screenplay, Jannicke Systad Jabobsen, Turn Me On, Goddammit (Fa meg pa, for faen).

The award for best new narrative director went to Park Jungbum, writer-director of the South Korea film Journals of Musan (Musan Il-gi). Kivu Ruhorahoza, writer and director of Grey Matter (Matiere Grise), received a special jury mention.

In addition to feature winner Bombay Beach, documentary prizes were awarded for: best editing, Purcell Carson, Semper Fi: Always Faithful; and best new documentary director, Pablo Croce, Like Water. Michael Collins, director of Give Up Tomorrow, received a special jury mention.

In the short film categories the winners were: Best narrative short, Man and Boy, directed by David Leon and Marcus McSweeney, written by Leon and Rashid Rasaq; special jury mention, Jason LaMotte, The Terms; best documentary short,?Incident in New Baghdad, written and directed by James Spione; special jury mention, Guru, written and directed by Jonathan VanBallenberghe.

Rooms, written and directed by Joanna Jurewicz, received the Student Visionary Award. A special jury mention went to Eva ? Working Title, written and directed by Dor Fadlon.

Online awards, voted by visitors to tribecafilm.com, went to the feature film Donor Unknown, directed and written by Jerry Rothwell, and the short film, Dungeon Master, directed by Shiloh and Rider Strong.

Screenings of all winning films will take place throughout the final day of the festival, May 1, at various venues around New York.
