Iko-Iko, with Graham Wood Drout and Nicole Yarling out front, offer a delicious version of "Tupelo Honey." Yarling will perform at a fundraiser for the ailing Graham on Sunday.
Independence Day brings with it an element of thankfulness, for living in a nation dedicated to liberty and opportunity. It is not much of a stretch then to pause beneath the fireworks and make a mental note of other things to appreciate, like family, friends and good health. Because you just never know ...
MUSIC FOR A CAUSE
A who?s-who of South Florida blues musicians will mobilize at a Sunday fundraiser for Graham Wood Drout, the Iko-Iko bandleader hospitalized with complications from diabetes. The 2:30 p.m. gathering, which includes a silent auction, can be expected to pack Fishtales (3355 NE 33rd St., Fort Lauderdale) with players and fans of the man who has donated plenty of time and sweat to many local causes. Among those due to perform are Albert Castiglia, Joel DaSilva, Big City, Beverly Lewis, Nicole Yarling, Jeff Prine, Joey Gilmore and the Nouveaux Honkies. Another special guest on the bill is Iko-Iko alum Nick Kane. For more information, and to donate to the cause, go to Iko-iko.com, or call Fishtales at 954-689-2344.
GET FUNKY, Y'ALL
The Funky Biscuit (303 SE Mizner Blvd., Boca Raton) celebrates a first anniversary with a weekend slate of shows, each with its own rewards. At 8 p.m. Friday, the elliptical jams of Crazy Fingers get spiked by the soulful slide guitar of the Lee Boys? Roosevelt Collier (admission: $8); on Saturday at 8 p.m., the sacred steel of the Lee Boys (left) is joined by the Fabulous Fleetwoods and Juke ($15); and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Collier and blues faves David Shelley and Bluestone join headliner Duane Trucks and his new Southern-fried funk project, Flannel Church. Trucks, of course, is the younger brother of Derek and drummer for Col. Bruce Hampton and the Pharoah Gummit. Sunday admission is by optional donation, and a three-day pass is available for $18. DMX WEIGHS IN
If rap music is, in the words of Public Enemy?s Chuck D, ?the CNN of the ghetto,? the gruff and oft-jailed DMX is a particularly ambitious reporter and poet, as illustrated in the Grammy-nominated hit ?Who We Be?:
?The friends, the foes, the Benz, the hoes (What?!)
The studios, the shows, comes, and it goes (C?mon!)
The jealousy, the envy, the phony, the friendly (Uh-huh!)
The one that gave ?em the slugs, the one that put ?em in me
The snakes, the grass, too long, to see (Uhh, uhh!)
The lawnmower, sittin, right next, to the tree (C?mon!)?
DMX recently released a mix tape, ?The Weigh In,? that suggested a new album is imminent. So does his current tour, which stops for an 18-and-older show Friday at Revolution Live in downtown Fort Lauderdale (100 SW Third Ave.). Miami rebels Alligator City and DJ GQ open. Tickets: $25 at the box office or via Ticketmaster. Info: JointheRevolution.net, 954-449-1025.
WHITE RINGING IN YOUR EAR
Next door at the Green Room (109 SW Second Ave.) Friday night, the mesmerizing New York duo White Ring will inject you with its unique drip of aural hallucinogens on a bill with Death Face beginning at 9 p.m. Radio-Active Records? A young, creative gathering will get the weekend going at the Bass Museum of Art (2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) with Beats After Sunset, including DJ noodlings and free Herradura Tequila cocktails and tours of Bass exhibits from 8 to 11 p.m. Particularly resonant for the end of the work week are four installations from Charles LeDray, whose meticulously realized pieces inspired a traveling exhibit titled ?workworkworkworkwork.? The Bass pieces showcase LeDray?s detailed craftsmanship using a range of materials, from fabric to human bone. Basspass? and museum members get in free; nonmembers pay $8. The afterparty is at Chalk Ping Pong and Billiards Lounge (1234 Washington Ave.) with free pingpong from 11 p.m. to midnight and a complimentary drink for Bass guests. ?TUSK,? ANYONE?
Even five years later, the astonishment lingers for Lindsey Buckingham?s Parker Playhouse stop on his 2007 Under the Skin tour. The guitar prowess, the unexpected self-deprecation of his stage banter and the imaginative, bluesy readings he gave to such Fleetwood Mac staples as ?World Turning,? ?Go Your Own Way,? ?Tusk,? and even a pop bauble such as ?Holiday Road? ? Surprises were many. Buckingham just added East Coast dates to his U.S. tour in support of the album ?Seeds We Sow,? including an Aug. 8 concert at the Gusman Center (174 E. Flagler St., Miami).
