New Video Resource: Creating Mobile Only Campaigns

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ve probably noticed that we frequently advise our advertisers to create mobile specific AdWords campaigns. This is because separating out your mobile and desktop campaigns is a powerful method of driving performance on mobile.  In fact, advertisers have experienced an 11.5% average increase in mobile clickthrough rates when they’ve ran and optimized a mobile only campaign.

So today we are happy to share a new resource that will help guide you in setting up a mobile specific campaign. Watch the video below and learn how to create a mobile-only campaign directly in your AdWords account or by using the AdWords Editor tool.

After you’ve set up your mobile-only campaign, follow these optimization tips to gain competitive advantage and maximize your performance on mobile.
  • Exercise more control and flexibility:  By using a separate mobile-only campaign you’ll gain better visibility into your mobile specific performance. Use this information to  optimize your bids, keyword lists and creatives without impacting your desktop campaign.
  • Budget and bid separately for mobile: Since less ads show on mobile devices, bid aggressively to ensure your ads are competitive and appear in the top spots.
  • Tailor your ad creatives for mobile:  Create mobile specific ad copy and calls to action such as “Receive a quote on your phone” which could attract more attention from mobile consumers.
  • Make the most of mobile:  You can take better advantage of powerful mobile-specific ad features such as Click-to-call and location-based ads which offer more relevance and convenience to users on the go.
We hope that you’ll enjoy this new resource and find it useful in optimizing your mobile marketing campaigns.

Important changes to clicks on directions for AdWords location extensions

Cross-posted on the Inside AdWords blog

Many advertisers use location extensions to automatically show the most relevant addresses and business information in the ads they run on Google both on desktops and mobile devices. Along with address and phone numbers, these ads also show directions to the business location. A click to access directions enables customers to map the quickest route from where they are located to a business that they want to visit.

We’ve also observed that location extensions with “directions” are beneficial to users and lead to more interactions with the ad. And, in January, we launched a report in AdWords to help you measure these useful interactions.

And, over the next few weeks, you’ll see performance metrics for “directions” alongside those for clicks and phone calls. We’ll also begin to charge for “directions” clicks in the same manner as a click on your ad’s headline and/or phone number. If your campaign has a high number of “directions” clicks, this indicates that your customers are interacting with your ads to get directions to your business.

(click for full-size image)

Below are some answers to a few questions that you may have as a result of this change:

Where will I see the performance metrics for “directions” clicks?
You can see the number of directions clicks in the same place as your other click metrics (select Segment, thenClick type from your summary tables). You can review the performance of “direction” clicks to determine if they are helping you meet your marketing goals.

How will “directions” appear in ads on desktop and mobile devices?
For AdWords campaigns with location extensions enabled, a “directions” link will be eligible to appear in the ad and on sponsored map bubbles in Google Map on desktops.

On mobile search ads, a “Get directions in Google Maps?” pop-up will appear when the user clicks on the expandable map. Clicking on “OK” in the pop-up allows users to access directions and will be charged.

Where can I see past performance of “directions” clicks?
For a report, select the Free clicks view within the Dimensions tab of your AdWords account. If you don't see theDimensions tab in your account, click the arrow button next to the existing tabs above your performance table, and select Free clicks in the dropdown menu.

I do not want to pay for “directions” clicks. How can I opt out?
You can do this by removing location extensions associated with your campaign. However, location extensions provide valuable information to your customers about your local business, so we encourage you to carefully analyze your campaign performance before doing so.

To learn more about location extensions and directions in ads, please see the location extensions overview section of the Help Center.

AdMob celebrates one year at Google as mobile growth accelerates

Cross-posted on the Official Google Blog
As we approach the first anniversary of AdMob’s arrival at Google this Friday, it’s amazing to look at how much the mobile industry has grown since last year: an estimated 300 million smartphones were shipped, average smartphone data-usage doubled and hundreds of thousands of new mobile apps have been created.

Many thousands of mobile publishers and developers use ads to support their businesses, so we’re excited to see rapid growth in mobile advertising, too.  For example, in the last year, traffic on the AdMob network has grown more than three and a half times, and we now get more than 2.7 billion ad requests every day. We have thousands of advertisers both large and small getting great results every day on AdMob’s network of more than 80,000 mobile apps and sites.  To celebrate AdMob’s first year at Google, today we’re introducing a set of new products and features for mobile advertisers and publishers.

New ad formats for tablets
In the last six months alone, traffic from tablets on the AdMob network has increased by 300 percent.  To help advertisers better connect with tablet users, today we’re launching a variety of new, tablet-specific rich media ad formats.  These new HTML5-based ad formats are built specifically for tablets’ larger, high-definition screens, and make use of features like touch, tap and swipe. Together, these features will enable advertisers to develop rich, engaging campaigns and run them across multiple mobile platforms.

Enhanced tools for mobile app developers
To help app developers grow their app businesses, we’re releasing a significant upgrade to our AdMob “House Ads” product, which developers can use to promote their own products within their mobile apps. The new version includes improved campaign management, new ad formats and better ad targeting options.
In the coming months, we’ll also improve mobile app developers’ ability to use AdMob to deliver the most valuable ad by integrating a new “mediation” feature that selects the best ad from multiple, competing ad networks directly into the Google AdMob Ads SDK.
Deeper integration with Google advertising products
Many advertisers, agencies and publishers use DoubleClick’s ad serving and measurement tools to manage their digital ad campaigns. We envision a single platform that enables seamless management of ads across desktop, video, mobile and tablets. Our announcement earlier this week about the availability of DoubleClick Rich Media ads on the AdMob Network on the AdMob network is one example of this commitment. In a few weeks, we’ll also add support for mobile to our DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP) Small Business ad serving product, which thousands of web publishers use today to manage ads that appear on their sites.

The last year has seen incredible growth, but it’s just the beginning. We believe that the products we’re announcing today will further accelerate the growth of mobile advertising, enable marketers and developers to rapidly grow their businesses and help to fund more great mobile content and apps for users.

Mobile Insights: Click-to-call proves a valuable addition to the advertising mix

Here’s the second post in our Mobile Insights series, featuring expert views from members of our mobile ads business. Welcome this week’s guest contributor, Anjali Vaidya, an Account Manager on the mobile ads team who shares her experiences on our Click-to-call (CTC) offering in mobile ads.

We’re continually making enhancements to the Click-to-call ad format. Launched in early 2010, CTC allows mobile consumers searching Google or visiting sites in the Google Display Network, to click on the phone number and speak to someone who can explain more about the product or service.

One enhancement was our Call-only format to allow advertisers to receive only calls, instead of clicks, to their website. Starting this week, we’re making the Call-only format even better by including a phone icon and moving the phone number above the ad.

The convenience and immediacy of CTC for users has made it one of Google’s fastest-growing advertising solutions. Click-to-call is a great addition to the advertising mix. You can still drive searchers to your website, but it gives you other advantages:
  • it’s a great option if you don’t yet have a mobile-optimized website;
  • it captures consumers who are ready to act;
  • it allows you to drive traffic to a strong call center, giving you a competitive edge over other online advertisers.
We’re generating millions of calls every month on mobile devices and the number of advertisers using phone extensions is growing quickly. The uptake for CTC is fast because advertisers are realizing great returns.
  • Home security provider Defender Direct gets 75-80% of online advertising clicks using Click-to-call. Four out of their top 10 campaigns in terms of clicks are now mobile. And the calling customers  are ready to consult with an expert about the ins and outs of alarm systems. Once the company started targeting high-end smartphones, their returns from mobile ads and CTC skyrocketed. Results were soon double what they got from desktop search. Today, Google mobile ads constitute 24% of the company’s overall online budget.
  • When auto insurance company Esurance started using mobile ads and CTC they found that they could acquire customers at 20-30% less cost compared with other channels. Esurance wanted to put interested people in touch with agents or claims representative in a few simple steps. Reaching the company is faster and easier for customers, and a less expensive way to acquire leads for Esurance. Calls coming from CTC mobile ads are more likely to result in sales.
  • The Carphone Warehouse has had great success with mobile ads CTC too. The UK mobile phone retailer created a mobile website where visitors can search for headset details and price plans. They used Mobile Ad Sitelinks to provide deep links into the site and incorporated CTC in ads to allow users to reach a call center agent to get advice or buy.
Our advice? Test Click-to-call, whether you’re a national or local business, to see how it can generate sales. Our customers have shown us that mobile searchers will research your products on their phones, and they appreciate the convenience of calling from that same device. Once they call, they are even closer to purchase. Your best leads are only a phone call away, try Click-to-call today!

Delivering Mobile Branding at Scale with DoubleClick Rich Media

AdMob is excited to announce that rich media ads can now be served from DoubleClick into the AdMob network. This feature is currently in beta and will also enable advertisers to create and measure rich media ads from DoubleClick Rich Media.

To date, AdMob advertisers have relied on AdMob systems to serve their mobile rich media ads. Today, the beta will pave the way for advertisers in mobile to build, serve, manage and report on rich media ad units using the DoubleClick tools that they, and their agencies, are already familiar with. Creative agencies will be able to use DoubleClick Studio, a creative platform for producing rich media ads, to output rich, HTML5 mobile creatives for placement on AdMob apps. Media agencies will be able to use DoubleClick’s ad server, DoubleClick for Advertisers (DFA), to serve and report on rich media ads in mobile.

To date, advertisers on DoubleClick have enjoyed the ability to build an ad once and run it anywhere with online display and rich media ads. AdMob’s beta with DoubleClick gets us one step closer to making this possible for mobile display advertising too.

Best Registry Scanning And Cleaning Software Available for Sale ...

Many free trial registry scanner programs are widely accessible for unlimited online downloads. These free-to-try products offer online scanning without cost, and return with a list of maliciously infected system files that could be keeping your computers sluggish. Free trial version of registry scanner applications include RegCure, Registry Easy, Registry Fix, Registry Mechanic, RegSweep, and RegClean.

Now Regcure is a software that assists you thoroughly clean the pc computer registry quickly. Towards the end of the scanning it should give you a meticulous report. Scanning is the crucial step to clean the pc registry. Scanning is very essential because it lets you know the problems that lies inside the computer. After completely scanning you?ll find that many of the files and registries being fixed with the software and likewise you?ll find few files that can be still ought to be fixed manually. You can now choose weather to mend them or delete it entirely.

Yet another software that comes to my mind is the Registry easy. The registry Easy software does all the task that was done by the Regcure software in addition to this it will also find the DLL and runtime errors . Moreover the software also backup the data of your computer so that it does not get damaged while scanning.

If You don?t have sufficient money to spend to shop for a high-end product you can always buy a cheaper version of registry cleaner which is called as a Registry Fix. The Registry fix software is also having a good user interface and is also excellent in handling the browser objects. This software provides complete data backup of your computer and also enables you to store the programs easily so you might get started and operate without any hassles.

One more registry scanner that I would like to talk about here would be the Registry mechanic. Registry mechanic has an option to scan the pc manually this is actually the added advantage that sets this aside from other registry cleaners discussed earlier. Additionally, it is having the real-time alerts feature which assists you find out the errors inside the computer as and when you use the computer. Both of these advantages are unavailable in any of the other software thus the Registry mechanic is very unique.

You might be overwhelmed by the features that the programs offers or may be confused as to which one to select. You?ll find few similarities in each one of the software commonalities like online support by e-mail or chat. another similarities that?s worth mentioning is the scan report which is given by the software after each scan is done.

If you would like further information about the Best Registry Cleaners then please click my blog in which I?ve explained the usage of Registry Cleaners at a great length

David James/Paramount Pictures

Robert Redford (as John Gage) and Demi Moore (as Diana Murphy) in "Indecent Proposal," 1993.

Jimi Izrael is the author of The Denzel Principle: Why Black Women Can't Find Good Black Men and a regular contributor to Tell Me More.

Arnold Schwarzenegger didn't invent marital infidelity, but rarely have we seen such a spectacular confluence of political drama and brazen husband misconduct since the Clinton years; it's a drama made for cinema. Hollywood has explored infidelity with fairly uneven results. Yet there are a few standout cheating films that have gone under the radar.

Without further ado, I present:

Five Great Films About The Perils of Infidelity

Indecent Proposal ? If someone wanted to pay your wife a million dollars for one night of passion, how could that possibly go wrong? Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson play the young couple that finds out and Robert Redford co-stars as the checkbook lothario. "Indecent Proposal" was built around a jerky script dependent on better actors. An adaptation of author Jack Engelhard's novel of the same name, it was a gut-wrenching study on love, money and trust that sparked dinner party conversations for years afterward.

A Thin Line Between Love and Hate ? Not a film about infidelity so much as the folly of philandering, Martin Lawrence gives one of the two best performances of his career as a nightclub impresario who can't settle down with good girl Regina King, instead opting for the richer, slightly batty, Lynn Whitfield. With appearances by Bobby Brown, Della Reese and Tracy Morgan, this film looks as if it were cast by phone. But somehow they all choke a thin script to the ground and make a comedic turn on "Fatal Attraction" that manages to be pretty entertaining.

To Die For ? Based loosely on the story of Pamela Smart, a woman convicted of hiring her 15-year old lover to kill her husband, this mockumentary about love, sex and ambition was ahead of its time. Nicole Kidman plays a wannabe newscaster who will do anything to be famous, and Joaquin Phoenix plays the young man who will do anything for her. A sad commentary on fame and fidelity you should see before dying.

Lolita (1997) - Jeremy Irons kills it as Humbert Humbert, the teacher who letches after young girls in general and Dolores Haze ? aka Lolita?specifically, going so far as to marry her mother to be closer her. More faithful to the novel than Stanley Kubrick's 1962 take on this same material, this film dares to combine sickness and sensuality to question the boundaries of love.

Little Children ? Kate Winslet is bored with her life as the housewife to a distracted husband, so she finds love at the playground. Patrick Wilson plays the lucky stay-at-home dad in a similarly disposable marriage. Planning a new life together, they both find love in the last place they were looking for it. Lust brings them together and lust tears them apart in this incredible film based on an equally well-done novel by Tom Perrotta.

Seems like there should be more, but no great American films come to mind. Which ones do you think I missed?

Cool Great Stuff | Finance - Student loan consolidation ? where to ...

I am looking at repaying my student loans starting in August. I was wondering a couple of things:

1) Are there some reputable websites out there with some sound advice on how to consolidate student loans (both undergrad and grad loans)?

2) Is it possible to consolidate loans from 2 different lenders?

3) How do you go about beginning the consolidation process? More specifically, should I be waiting until I have to start repaying or work on it now? Who should I be talking to a bank, credit union or my lenders to see about various repayment programs?

Please only serious responses. No scamming and I will be checking these websites. Anything that looks suspicious I will report as abuse.

In advance, thank you for your help!

Red-Hot LinkedIn IPO Heats Up Tech Bubble Talk

(Updated at 4 p.m. EDT with closing stock price and commentary.)

LinkedIn went public Thursday and, as expected, soared in its debut. But the social network for professionals outdid even the wildest expectations in what has become a red-hot IPO environment, ending the session up nearly 110% above its opening price of $45.

LinkedIn never traded below $80, and closed out its first day as a public company at $94.25 ? providing a windfall for the Wall Street insiders who participated in the offering, as well as the private investors who bought shares on secondary markets. LinkedIn raised over $100 million from Sequoia Capital, Greylock Partners and Bessemer Venture Capital Ventures. Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, and J.P. Morgan were the lead book-runners for the IPO. UBS and boutique tech-media firm Allen & Co. assisted.

?The guys who bought on the private markets going into this IPO got a fantastic deal,? said Espen Robak, president of Pluris Valuation Advisors, which helps hedge funds and other institutional investors price startups.

But LinkedIn?s eye-popping valuation ? $10 billion, as of today ? also fueled fears that the boom-mentality that abruptly ended the first internet IPO revolution is happening again.

?I do not understand how this valuation can be supported,? said Tim Keating, president of Denver-based Keating Capital, a boutique $53-million late-stage venture capital fund that invests in pre-IPO companies, but did not invest in LinkedIn. ?I think one has to ask oneself if LinkedIn should be trading at many orders of magnitude above their projected earnings.?

LinkedIn, which has more than 100 million members, earned $15.4 million on $243 million in revenue last year.

The optimists saw LinkedIn?s debut as confirmation that after years of relative inactivity, the tech IPO market is starting to come back to life for companies with real business prospects.

?There was a period there of very little activity during the recession with a lot of money on the sidelines, and I think we?re playing catch-up now,? said Rick Marini, founder and CEO of BranchOut, a Facebook-based social recruiting service that has raised $24 million in VC funding. ?Venture capitalists are putting money back to work, and companies that have a sustainable business model are being rewarded.?

New tech bubble or not, it?s clear there is massive demand in the public markets to own a piece of these high flying internet names. Web auto rental company ZipCar raised $174 million and watched its stock price close up 60 percent in its first day of trading last month. Demand Media, which went public in January, enjoyed a 33 percent first-day pop. And Chinese internet social networking giant Renren ? referred to as ?the Facebook of China? ? went public early in May, soaring 40 percent higher in its first day of trading.

No doubt a slew of IPO prospects, led by Facebook, which is valued at more than $50 billion and is expected to IPO next year, watched the proceedings with satisfaction. ?The secondary market for Facebook, Twitter, and Zynga got a real shot in the arm today,? Robak noted dryly.

Arnold Dropped $65,000 on Baby Mama's House

Arnold Schwarzenegger made a $65,000 down payment on a house for his ex-housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena -- less than a year before he admitted to fathering her child ... TMZ has learned.

0519_mildred_launch_EX_01

According to loan documents obtained by TMZ, Arnold made the "gift" payments in two installments from his own personal bank account -- one for $5,000 in April 2010 ... and one for $60,000 in May 2010.

According to the docs, the money was used to secure a loan for Patty's house in Bakersfield, CA -- where she currently lives with Arnold's 13-year-old love child.

The purchase price of the house was $268,000 -- so Arnold's down payment covered nearly a quarter of the total cost.

It's unclear if Maria was aware of the transaction at the time.

U.S. Predicts 3 To 6 Major Atlantic Hurricanes

Hurricane Isabel is shown in this satellite image taken on Sept. 15, 2003. U.S. government forecasters said Thursday that they expect three to six major hurricanes from an above-average Atlantic storm season this year.

U.S. government forecasters announced Thursday they expect three to six major hurricanes from an above-average Atlantic storm season.

No major hurricane has made a U.S. landfall in five years, but the forecasters warned U.S. coastal residents that odds are they can't expect a sixth straight year without a major landfall on either the Atlantic or Gulf coast.

As many as 18 named tropical storms may develop during the six-month Atlantic hurricane season that begins June 1, according to forecasters at the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration. Six to 10 of those storms could strengthen into hurricanes with top winds of at least 74 mph, the agency said. Three to six could become major hurricanes, with maximum winds of 111 mph and up.

Last year's hurricane season was one of the busiest on record with 19 named storms, including 12 hurricanes. The 2011 season was not expected to be as extreme, partly because ocean temperatures were only 2 degrees warmer than normal, instead of 4 degrees warmer as they were last year, said NOAA administrator Jane Lubchenco.

"We still expect that to support an above-average hurricane season," Lubchenco said.

Satellite Program

Lubchenco also used the occasion to point to the importance of NOAAs satellite program.

"Satellites are a must-have when it comes to being prepared and detecting and tracking dangerous tropical weather," she said. "Not having satellites and not applying their latest capabilities could spell disaster."

She said there's a very real possibility that could happen.

"The future funding for our satellite program is very much in limbo right now," she said.

Already, Lubchenco said, the agency has been forced to delay the launch of a critical satellite. It would have traveled in a polar orbit, beaming down information for weather and climate forecasts. As a result, when the current satellite doing that job stops working there will be no replacement.

"We are likely looking at a period of time a few years down the road where we will not be able to do severe storm warnings and long-term weather forecasts that people have come to expect today," she said.

And Lubchenco said satellites aren't just for hurricanes.

"For example our ability to do a five-day heads-up about the severe tornadoes that hit a couple of weeks ago was a direct consequence of us having polar orbiting satellites," she said.

Lubchenco's comments come after years of warnings by groups including the National Academy of Sciences that the U.S. needed to replace many aging satellites used to study and monitor the Earth.

La Nina

Lubchenco also said that "La Nina," a Pacific Ocean weather phenomenon, was expected to dissipate early in the summer before the season's peak, typically from August to October.

La Nina is an unusual cooling of the Pacific waters near the equator. When it's in effect, wind shear over the Caribbean Sea and tropical Atlantic decreases, meaning that tropical storms have a chance to develop and strengthen before being ripped apart.

Forecasters say La Nina helped make the 2010 season so active. The opposite El Nino phenomenon, which warms Pacific waters near the equator and increases wind shear over the Atlantic, helps suppress storm development.

Nevertheless, atmospheric and marine conditions indicating a high-activity era that began in 1995 continue, and lingering La Nina impacts such as reduced wind shear are conducive to a busy storm season, said Gerry Bell, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center in Washington.

"We don't think La Nina will be a player for much of the season, but that's really secondary," Bell said. "Conditions are already starting to be in place and we expect them to develop, and that's why we expect an active season to be likely."

'Cannot Count On' Luck

No major hurricane has made a U.S. landfall since Category 3 Hurricane Wilma struck Florida in 2005, though Hurricane Ike caused extensive damage in September 2008 when it roared ashore in Galveston, Texas, as a strong Category 2 storm with top winds around 109 mph. After peaking as a Category 4 storm near the Turks and Caicos Islands, Ike caused $10 billion in damage in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, making it the third-costliest storm after Hurricanes Katrina in 2005 and Andrew in 1992, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Scientists said coastal residents can't expect their luck to hold.

"The U.S. was lucky last year. Despite an above-normal season, we did not have significant damage from these storms on U.S. land. The winds that steer where storms go kept them away from our coastlines," Lubchenco said. "We cannot count on having the same luck this year."

Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate urged residents from Texas to Maine to develop disaster plans and determine whether they live in evacuation zones.

"Far too many people will not be prepared and will try to get ready in the last minutes when a hurricane is threatening their community and not have enough time," Fugate said.

Forecasters name tropical storms when their top winds reach 39 mph. The first named storm of the 2011 season will be Arlene.

The seasonal average is 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

In April, Colorado State University researchers predicted 16 named storms would form this season, with five strengthening into major hurricanes.

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30.

How To Grow A Successful Business Marketing Checklist Small ...

www.businesslistpro.com

The story behind every success story is actually a plan.

Business success almost never comes accidentally. It?s not about good luck or perfect timing. Taking articulated and organized steps will help you in every area of business growth from how you keep your records, measure progress, and market to prospects. There are so many tools for business and marketing management available today that the choices can be overwhelming. The solution to that is a rational, smart approach to knowing your business?s strengths and weaknesses. The right tool for the right goal will be more evident when you know exactly what needs to be accomplished.

Don?t assume that success comes from opening the door or putting up a website. Set Goals!

Set SMART goals for your business:

Specific: What do you want your marketing program to accomplish? Don?t be vague. State your goals very clearly. If your web traffic is low, perhaps a goal should be to increase website visits by 1000 per week. If you?re sending out lots of marketing materials but seeing few new customers as a result, a good goal might be to increase your sales conversion rate by 10%. Another example would be to add 100 new email contacts per month.

Measurable: Even a specific goal won?t? be much help if you can?t measure how you?re progressing along the way. Know what tools you need to accurately measure how you?re doing. Google Analytics is great (and free) for web traffic and keyword research. Special coupons with time sensitive copy can measure response to ads. Keep good records, create charts, and use pay-per-click management tools to monitor where you are on goal attainment.

Actionable: What will you do to reach these goals? What specific action can you take today, tomorrow, next week? It?s great to know where you want to go, but you must work your way back from your goal to what you can do today to get started. Break it down into baby steps. For example: ?We will begin using Twitter January 4, 2010 to direct traffic to our weekly blog articles.? Or, ?Each Tuesday we will send an email blast containing a promotional discount to be used by the following Friday?.

Realistic: Look to the long-term for the ultimate goal but you should break this down into smaller, achievable pieces. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. For instance, to reach your 3 year sales goal, you may need to grow an average of $400 per week in 2010, $600 per week in 2011, and $1100 per week in 2012. Incremental steps make goal attainment much more likely to occur.

Time bound: When will you achieve this goal? What is the target date? In the example above, the company has a 3 year goal but it?s also broken down into 1 year increments as well as what that looks like weekly within those years.

After you set your goals, take action to make them happen.

What outlets will you use and how will you use them? What works better for some companies won?t work for others. Your B2B marketing plan should take your specific prospect base into consideration. Make your message consistently available across many outlets and let the customers decide what works best for them.

Direct Marketing is best done with a targeted contact list that allows you to reach your specific audience via email, direct mail, and telemarketing. Don?t waste your energy reaching people who can?t use your product or service: focus on those who can. Networking today is more than the local Chamber of Commerce or trade conference. Don?t neglect online B2B networking options. Every social media outlet also has local and industry-wide networking. Twitter uses ?Tweet Ups? to connect locals and Linked-In introduces professionals to one another with common industry ties.

What Is Planking? [What Is]

Casey Chan ?What Is Planking?Planking is blowing up the news these day. Old people would say it's another instance of why the youth is screwed. Kids would fire back the most fun you can have being still. Who's right? And just what the hell is planking?

It's a stupid internet sensation...

Planking is the act of lying facedown for a photograph. The term planking originated from Australia but is actually just another name for 'the lying down game' (I'm not kidding). The specific instructions: to put your body face down to the ground (or table, or object, or anything) with your arms to the side. Yeah.

...that's really, really stupid...

Again, the act itself is to lie down on the ground. Anybody can do that, right? That's why kids are getting crazier. You get creativity points for planking in odd places like trees branches. Or escalators. Or animals! Or balls. The more wild you get, the 'better' the picture will be.

...but is huge on Facebook.

The Official Planking Facebook page has over 180,000 fans and tons of pictures showcasing the best plankers around the world. Hell, the whole idea about planking is to upload it to your Facebook account so your friends can see it, as planking alone is not planking at all.

Unfortunately, it's not all fun and games...

An Aussie man died for trying to plank on a balcony, plummeting 7 stories to the ground. Police are growing concerned that people are trying to one up each other in their planking.

...so don't go nuts if you plank...

I think a safe policy would be to not plank anywhere you wouldn't sit.

...or really, just don't plank at all.

Come on, people.

Health Workers Call On McDonald's To Retire Ronald

During a demonstration in Chicago, Jack Nugent (right), part of a group organized by Corporate Accountability International, urged a pedestrian to support his cause calling for McDonald's to retire Ronald McDonald in March 2010.

A bunch of health professionals are ratcheting up the pressure on McDonald's to change the way it markets its wares.

In an open letter to the company's CEO published in newspapers across the country signed by hundreds of doctors, nurses and others linked the company's marketing of unhealthful food to children to the rise in obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

We ask that you heed our concern and retire your marketing promotions for food high in salt, fat, sugar, and calories to children, whatever form they take ? from Ronald McDonald to toy giveaways. Our children and health care system will benefit from your leadership on this issue.

The push is the work of Corporate Accountability International, a nonprofit group that has campaigned against the marketing of bottled water, infant formula and Joe Camel. The challenge to McDonald's comes the day before the company's annual meeting. The group sought Ronald McDonald's retirement last year, too.

In response to the open letter, McDonald's said in a statement emailed to Shots:

McDonald's cares about kids. We are committed to responsible advertising and take our communications to children very seriously.

We understand the importance of children's health and nutrition, and are committed to being part of the dialogue and solution.

We serve high quality food, and our Happy Meals offer choice and variety in portions just for kids. Parents tell us they appreciate our Happy Meal choices.

As the face of Ronald McDonald House Charities, Ronald is an ambassador for good and delivers important messages to kids on safety, literacy and balanced, active lifestyles.

At tomorrow's annual meeting McDonald's shareholders will vote on a proposal put forward by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia asking the company to report on what it's doing to address the public's concerns about the health effects of fast food. They are especially interested in how the fare affects kids.

McDonald's board of directors recommends against the nuns' proposal, saying, in part:

[T]he report requested is unnecessary in light of our Company's history in addressing the issues raised by the proposal and in reporting on our activities in an open and transparent way. We acknowledge the importance of the subject of children's health and nutrition. While these are global issues that require actions that go well beyond what our Company or any other provider of prepared foods can take on its own, we are committed to being part of the effort to address the issues underlying the concerns.

Marlon Brando Estate Sues Harley-Davidson Over "Brando" Boots

The estate of famed actor Marlon Brando has filed a lawsuit against?Harley-Davidson Motor Company for allegedly selling a line of boots called "The Brando."

Brando Enterprises says in a lawsuit filed in California that the "Brando" boots misappropriate the late actor's likeness. It wants an injunction to stop the motorcycle giant from continuing to sell and marketing the footwear.

We've heard of all sorts of claims by celebrities over their publicity rights: image, name, voice, etc. Last year, the estate of?Humphrey Bogart went to war over a couch called the "Bogart" that was said to confuse the public. So it's probably not a shocker that boots have now made the list of alleged infringements.

According to the lawsuit, the boots look similar to a pair that Brando wore in the 1953 classic The Wild One. If you want to judge for yourself, here's a close-up picture of the Brando boot, sold on Amazon.com for just over $100.

In announcing the lawsuit,?Jeffrey Abrams, the lawyer for the estate, pointed out that Harley-Davidson has been aggressive in its own right on the trademark front.

"It is interesting that Harley-Davidson -- a company that is vigorously protective of its own brand -- would seek to exploit an iconic property without benefit of a licensing agreement," said Abrams. "The flagrant disregard for the law by Harley-Davidson cannot be tolerated. It is our mission to protect the Marlon Brando name and we will pursue any company or individual who infringes on these rights meant to benefit the Brando family."

Harley Davidson hasn't yet responded to a request for comment.

Chapter 1
The Secret

My father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist. He was already married ten years when he first clamped eyes on my mother. In 1968, she was working at the gift-wrap counter at Davison's downtown when my father asked her to wrap the carving knife he had bought his wife for their wedding an?niversary. Mother said she knew that something wasn't right between a man and a woman when the gift was a blade. I said that maybe it means there was a kind of trust between them. I love my mother, but we tend to see things a little bit differently. The point is that James's marriage was never hidden from us. James is what I call him. His other daughter, Chaurisse, the one who grew up in the house with him, she calls him Daddy, even now.

When most people think of bigamy, if they think of it at all, they imagine some primitive practice taking place on the pages of National Geographic. In Atlanta, we remember one sect of the back-to-Africa movement that used to run bakeries in the West End. Some people said it was a cult, others called it a cultural movement. Whatever it was, it involved four wives for each husband. The bakeries have since closed down, but sometimes we still see the women, resplendent in white, trailing six humble paces behind their mutual husband. Even in Baptist churches, ushers keep smelling salts on the ready for the new widow confronted at the wake by the other grieving widow and her stair-step kids. Undertakers and judges know that it hap?pens all the time, and not just between religious fanatics, travel?ing salesmen, handsome sociopaths, and desperate women.

It's a shame that there isn't a true name for a woman like my mother, Gwendolyn. My father, James, is a bigamist. That is what he is. Laverne is his wife. She found him first and my mother has always respected the other woman's squatter's rights. But was my mother his wife, too? She has legal documents and even a single Polaroid proving that she stood with James Alexander Witherspoon Junior in front of a judge just over the state line in Alabama. However, to call her only his "wife" doesn't really explain the full complexity of her position.

There are other terms, I know, and when she is tipsy, angry, or sad, Mother uses them to describe herself: concubine, whore, mistress, consort. There are just so many, and none are fair. And there are nasty words, too, for a person like me, the child of a person like her, but these words were not allowed in the air of our home. "You are his daughter. End of story." If this was ever true it was in the first four months of my life, before Chaurisse, his legitimate daughter, was born. My mother would curse at hearing me use that word, legitimate, but if she could hear the other word that formed in my head, she would close herself in her bedroom and cry. In my mind, Chaurisse is his real daughter. With wives, it only matters who gets there first. With daughters, the situation is a bit more complicated.

It matters what you called things. Surveil was my mother's word. If he knew, James would probably say spy, but that is too sinister. We didn't do damage to anyone but ourselves as we trailed Chaurisse and Laverne while they wound their way through their easy lives. I had always imagined that we would eventually be asked to explain ourselves, to press words forward in our own defense. On that day, my mother would be called upon to do the talking. She is gifted with language and is able to layer difficult details in such a way that the result is smooth as water. She is a magician who can make the whole world feel like a dizzy illusion. The truth is a coin she pulls from behind your ear.

Maybe mine was not a blissful girlhood. But is anyone's? Even people whose parents are happily married to each other and no one else, even these people have their share of unhappi?ness. They spend plenty of time nursing old slights, rehashing squabbles. So you see, I have something in common with the whole world.

Mother didn't ruin my childhood or anyone's marriage. She is a good person. She prepared me. Life, you see, is all about knowing things. That is why my mother and I shouldn't be pitied. Yes, we have suffered, but we never doubted that we enjoyed at least one peculiar advantage when it came to what really mattered: I knew about Chaurisse; she didn't know about me. My mother knew about Laverne, but Laverne was under the impression that hers was an ordinary life. We never lost track of that basic and fundamental fact.

When did I first discover that although I was an only child, my father was not my father and mine alone? I really can't say. It's something that I've known for as long as I've known that I had a father. I can only say for sure when I learned that this type of double-duty daddy wasn't ordinary.

I was about five years old, in kindergarten, when the art teacher, Miss Russell, asked us to draw pictures of our fami?lies. While all the other children scribbled with their cray?ons or soft-leaded pencils, I used a blue-ink pen and drew James, Chaurisse, and Laverne. In the background was Raleigh, my father's best friend, the only person we knew from his other life. I drew him with the crayon labeled "Flesh" be?cause he is really light-skinned. This was years and years ago, but I still remember. I hung a necklace around the wife's neck. I gave the girl a big smile, stuffed with square teeth. Near the left margin, I drew my mother and me standing by ourselves. With a marker, I blacked in Mother's long hair and curving lashes. On my own face, I drew only a pair of wide eyes. Above, a friendly sun winked at all six of us.

The art teacher approached me from behind. "Now, who are these people you've drawn so beautifully?"

Charmed, I smiled up at her. "My family. My daddy has two wifes and two girls."

Cocking her head, she said, "I see."

I didn't think much more about it. I was still enjoying the memory of the way she pronounced beautifully. To this day, when I hear anyone say that word, I feel loved. At the end of the month, I brought all of my drawings home in a cardboard folder. James opened up his wallet, which he kept plump with two-dollar bills to reward me for my schoolwork. I saved the portrait, my masterpiece, for last, being as it was so beautifully drawn and everything.

My father picked the page up from the table and held it close to his face like he was looking for a coded message. Mother stood behind me, crossed her arms over my chest, and bent to place a kiss on the top of my head. "It's okay," she said.

"Did you tell your teacher who was in the picture?" James said.

I nodded slowly, the whole time thinking that I probably should lie, although I wasn't quite sure why.

"James," Mother said, "let's not make a molehill into a moun?tain. She's just a child."

"Gwen," he said, "this is important. Don't look so scared. I'm not going to take her out behind the woodshed." Then he chuckled, but my mother didn't laugh.

"All she did was draw a picture. Kids draw pictures."

"Go on in the kitchen, Gwen," James said. "Let me talk to my daughter."

My mother said, "Why can't I stay in here? She's my daugh?ter, too."

"You are with her all the time. You tell me I don't spend enough time talking to her. So now let me talk."

Mother hesitated and then released me. "She's just a little kid, James. She doesn't even know the ins and outs yet."

"Trust me," James said.

She left the room, but I don't know that she trusted him not to say something that would leave me wounded and broken-winged for life. I could see it in her face. When she was upset she moved her jaw around invisible gum. At night, I could hear her in her room, grinding her teeth in her sleep. The sound was like gravel under car wheels.

"Dana, come here." James was wearing a navy chauffeur's uniform. His hat must have been in the car, but I could see the ridged mark across his forehead where the hatband usually rested. "Come closer," he said.

I hesitated, looking to the space in the doorway where Mother had disappeared.

"Dana," he said, "you're not afraid of me, are you? You're not scared of your own father, are you?"

His voice sounded mournful, but I took it as a dare. "No, sir," I said, taking a bold step forward.

"Don't call me sir, Dana. I'm not your boss. When you say that, it makes me feel like an overseer."

I shrugged. Mother told me that I should always call him sir. With a sudden motion, he reached out for me and lifted me up on his lap. He spoke to me with both of our faces looking outward, so I couldn't see his expression.

"Dana, I can't have you making drawings like the one you made for your art class. I can't have you doing things like that. What goes on in this house between your mother and me is grown people's business. I love you. You are my baby girl, and I love you, and I love your mama. But what we do in this house has to be a secret, okay?"

"I didn't even draw this house."

James sighed and bounced me on his lap a little bit. "What happens in my life, in my world, doesn't have anything to do with you. You can't tell your teacher that your daddy has another wife. You can't tell your teacher that my name is James Witherspoon. Atlanta ain't nothing but a country town, and everyone knows everybody."

"Your other wife and your other girl is a secret?" I asked him.

He put me down from his lap, so we could look each other in the face. "No. You've got it the wrong way around. Dana, you are the one that's a secret."

Then he patted me on the head and tugged one of my braids. With a wink he pulled out his billfold and separated three two-dollar bills from the stack. He handed them over to me and I clamped them in my palm.

"Aren't you going to put them in your pocket?"

"Yes, sir."

And for once, he didn't tell me not to call him that.

James took me by the hand and we walked down the hallway to the kitchen for dinner. I closed my eyes on the short walk because I didn't like the wallpaper in the hallway. It was beige with a burgundy pattern. When it had started peeling at the edges, I was accused of picking at the seams. I denied it over and over again, but Mother reported me to James on his weekly visit. He took off his belt and swatted me around the legs and up on my backside, which seemed to satisfy something in my mother.

In the kitchen my mother placed the bowls and plates on the glass table in silence. She wore her favorite apron that James brought back from New Orleans. On the front was a draw?ing of a crawfish holding a spatula aloft and a caption: don't make me poison your food! James took his place at the head of the table and polished the water spots from his fork with his napkin. "I didn't lay a hand on her; I didn't even raise my voice. Did I?"

"No, sir." And this was entirely the truth, but I felt different than I had just a few minutes before when I'd pulled my draw?ing out of its sleeve. My skin stayed the same while this differ?ence snuck in through a pore and attached itself to whatever brittle part forms my center. You are the secret. He'd said it with a smile, touching the tip of my nose with the pad of his finger.

My mother came around and picked me up under my arms and sat me on the stack of phone books in my chair. She kissed my cheek and fixed a plate with salmon croquettes, a spoon of green beans, and corn.

"Are you okay?"

I nodded.

James ate his meal, spooning honey onto a dinner roll when my mother said there would be no dessert. He drank a big glass of Coke.

"Don't eat too much," my mother said. "You'll have to eat again in a little while."

"I'm always happy to eat your food, Gwen. I'm always happy to sit at your table."
